Brač Island Stone Treasure

The Brač stone has been used in construction since ancient times, adorning structures like Diocletian’s Palace in Split and St. James’s Cathedral in Šibenik to this day. There are tales of its use in building the White House in Washington, though concrete evidence is challenging to find.

In contemporary times, modern designers have recognized its value, transitioning it from architecture to the fashion world. As I handcraft jewelry from Brač stone, I cannot overlook the fascinating geology that makes this material special. Extracted from Brač quarries, processed, and transformed into a raw material for art and construction, the stone has a place in today’s art world. Brač still hosts a school for stonemasons, preserving this beautiful tradition. The quarries, like time capsules, hold the story of the island’s geological evolution. Over the centuries, processes like sedimentation and tectonic shifts shaped these rocks, creating layers and patterns that seamlessly complement the elegant style of my creations.

Geologically speaking, Brač stone isn’t marble, as it’s often called. Its white color comes from calcite in limestone, and darker parts are fragments of sediment from fossilized shellfish. Its ability to withstand weather conditions makes Brač limestone ideal for construction projects and contributes to the durability of my jewelry, leading me to the topic of sustainability. By using local materials, I reduce my ecological footprint while supporting traditional Croatian craftsmanship. Through this sustainable practice, I encourage people to reflect on the importance of local resources, a crucial consideration in today’s world of globalization and fast fashion.

For me, Brač stone is more than a fashion accessory; it’s a narrative about the beauty of the island of Brač and a stonecraft tradition that has endured for centuries. Each piece of my jewelry becomes a story of the fusion of modern design and tradition.
